Hotel door lock systems: how do RFID card locks work?

A hotel door lock system combines battery-powered RFID locks on each door, contactless key cards, a USB card encoder and lock software at reception. Reception writes the room number and stay dates onto the card; the lock reads it, checks those rights against its clock and couples the handle to the latch only for a valid card, logging each opening.
