Hotel lock installation: how do you fit a card door lock?

Hotel lock installation follows a fixed order: survey the door, confirm its handing, fit the mortise lock body, mount the outside reader and inside trim with the template, adjust the strike, fit the batteries, then program and test every card level before handing the room over. On a standard timber door with a correctly sized pocket, one card lock usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes; the first doors take longer and series fitting is faster.

The steps below are a general method. The installation manual and template supplied with your lock model always take priority.

What do you need before installing a hotel card lock?

Check the door and the kit before anyone picks up a drill:

  • Door type: standard timber, steel or a fire-rated door set. Fire doors are prepared only as the door manufacturer specifies.
  • Door thickness and profile: for example, Coral Dark and Coral Black fit doors 35–60 mm thick, and General Slim is made for narrow uPVC and aluminium-framed sliding doors.
  • Handing: left or right hand, opening inwards or outwards.
  • Existing pocket: compare the old mortise pocket with the dimensions of the new lock body.
  • Power: a battery-only lock, or wired items nearby such as an energy saver or doorbell.
  • Kit: lock body, outside reader trim, inside trim, spindles, fixing screws, paper template and manual.

Tools: a cordless drill with suitable bits, a router or mortise jig if the pocket has to be enlarged, tape measure, square and spirit level, screwdrivers and hex keys, marking tape, and cable ties for wired items.

How do you install a hotel card lock step by step?

Step 1: Confirm the handing

Stand inside the room facing the door. If the hinges are on your right, it is a right-hand door; if they are on your left, it is left-hand. Make sure the lock ordered matches, otherwise the handle or reader will sit the wrong way round.

Step 2: Remove the old lock and check the pocket

Remove the old lock body, handles and cylinder. Measure the pocket in the door edge against the new mortise. If it matches, no routing is needed; if not, enlarge it carefully to the template dimensions.

Step 3: Fit the mortise lock body

Slide the lock body into the pocket for a trial fit. Check that the latch and deadbolt line up with the strike position in the frame, and close the door once before tightening the screws. Never force the body into a tight pocket: a twisted mortise causes faults that are hard to put right later.

Step 4: Mark and drill with the template

Tape the template to the door and mark the spindle, screw and cable holes. Drill at the diameters the manufacturer specifies, and only where the template shows.

Step 5: Mount the reader and inside trim

The outside trim carries the card reader and handle; the inside trim carries the inside handle. Pass the connecting cable through the door, fit the spindles and screws, and leave the final tightening until both trims sit flat against the leaf.

Step 6: Adjust the strike

Close the door and check that the latch and deadbolt enter the strike cleanly. Replace or move the strike if needed. The door should close without rubbing, slamming or rattling.

Step 7: Power up and test the mechanism

Fit the specified batteries. Open and close the door several times with the test or master card. Check that the card is read quickly, that the outside handle engages only after a valid read, that the inside handle always opens the door and that the deadlock works from inside.

Step 8: Program, register and hand over

Make sure the room number, the lock ID and the room record in the lock software match. Test guest, housekeeping, technical and master cards on the door, and test the room with the energy saver so the same card also powers the room. Then train the reception and technical teams to issue and cancel cards.

What are the most common installation mistakes?

On fire-rated door sets, copy the details of the tested assembly. In the TSE EN 1634-1 test of the General card lock, for instance, an intumescent seal was fitted below the strike pocket in the frame. The guide to fire-rated hotel door locks explains how to read that report.

How do you run a hotel-wide installation?

  • Plan doors and locks together: prepare mortise pockets during door production where possible, and use one lock body and template for all guest rooms.
  • Set up the room list early: agree room numbers, lock IDs and software records before fitting begins.
  • Route cables at rough-in: energy saver and doorbell cables, and any online lock cabling, are far easier to run before walls are closed. The 220/230 V energy saver wiring must be done by a qualified electrician.
  • Start with pilot rooms: fit the lock, energy saver and DND/MUR panel in one or two rooms, test everything, then roll out.

How do you maintain the locks after handover?

General Kilit card locks are rated for about two years or 50,000 openings per set of batteries. After the low-battery warning, around 200 more openings are possible, so replace batteries in planned batches rather than waiting for complaints. Check hinges, closers and seals at the same time, because some locks will not operate correctly if the door does not close fully.

Each lock keeps its last 800 openings (card type, card number, date and time), which can be downloaded by infrared to a data collection device when an incident has to be investigated. If a guest cannot get in, staff should check the card and the reader light, confirm that the door has not been deadlocked from inside, verify the guest's identity and then open the door with a master card or the mechanical override key. Doors should never be forced.

Frequently asked questions

Can a card lock be fitted to an existing hotel door?

Usually yes, if the door thickness, leaf construction and existing pocket suit the new lock body. Fire doors must be assessed with the door manufacturer before any routing or drilling.

How long does it take to install a hotel card lock?

On a standard timber door with a prepared pocket and matching dimensions, about 30 to 60 minutes per lock. The first doors take longer and series installation is faster.

How do you open a hotel card lock with a flat battery?

The lock warns first and allows around 200 more openings, so batteries should be changed in time. If needed, authorised staff can open the door with the mechanical override key.

Can a fire door be drilled on site for a card lock?

Only as the door manufacturer specifies. Extra or oversized holes can cost the door its fire approval, so prepare fire doors to the tested details and the lock template.

Who should wire the energy saver and doorbell?

A qualified electrician, following the room's electrical design. The energy saver runs on 220/230 V, and circuits that must stay live, such as the minibar, are wired separately.
